Authorities in the Philippines are expanding the danger zone surrounding the Kanlaon Volcano to 10 kilometers due to the threat of lahar flows from an approaching low-pressure area. Evacuation centers are also being moved further away from the volcano to ensure the safety of residents.
Authorities in the Philippines are planning to expand the permanent danger zone around the Kanlaon Volcano from six kilometers to 10 kilometers to safeguard residents from potential hazards posed by a low-pressure area ( LPA ) off the coast of Mindanao. The Office of Civil Defense in Western Visayas, led by Regional Director Raul Fernandez, also aims to relocate evacuation centers currently within the six-kilometer radius to a location at least 14 kilometers away from the volcano.
On December 9, alert level 3 was raised over Kanlaon Volcano following a renewed eruption, prompting mass evacuations. Based on OCD data, around 29 evacuation centers are operational on Negros Island, with 10 family tents set up in La Carlota City. A total of 18,475 individuals from 5,772 families have been evacuated within the six-kilometer danger zone, representing a 99.17% evacuation rate. Authorities are currently preventing residents from returning to the area, particularly as the LPA could trigger lahar flows. According to Fernandez, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) predicts a high likelihood of an explosive eruption due to ongoing volcanic activity, including volcanic earthquakes. Despite safety concerns, passes are being issued to evacuees who require temporary access to their homes and properties to tend to essential needs like feeding animals or performing farm tasks
