Defining the News

The Philippines and China moved towards easing tensions in the West Philippine Sea after convening the 9Bilateral Consultation Mechanism Tuesday in Manila, where both parties had a “frank and constructive” discussion arising from the recent incidents in the disputed waters.

Both Manila and Beijing agreed that there is a “need to restore trust, rebuild confidence, and create conditions conducive to productive dialogue and interaction,” following the June 17 ‘ramming and towing’ incident in the contested Ayungin Shoal between Chinese and Philippine vessels. “There was substantial progress on developing measures to manage the situation at sea, but significant differences remain. Both sides agreed to continue discussions to find a mutually-acceptable resolution to the issues,” the DFA said in a statement.
