The 5th Joint Bilateral Consultation Meeting between the Philippines and Oman was convened on January 21st, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). The meeting, held at the DFA Manila, commemorated the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. It was led by Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Bilateral Relations and Asean Affairs Ma.

Theresa Lazaro and Sheikh Khalifa bin Ali bin Issa Al Harthy, undersecretary for political affairs at the Omani Foreign Ministry. This marked the fifth installment in a series of regular consultations initiated in 2014. Discussions during the meeting encompassed a wide range of topics, including political cooperation, economic cooperation, archaeology, technology, higher education, tourism, labor, migration, and maritime issues. Lazaro expressed gratitude to His Majesty Haitham bin Tarik, Sultan of Oman, for his instrumental role in securing the release of 17 Filipino crew members from MV Galaxy. These individuals had been held captive for over a year by Houthi rebels. Sheikh Khalifa bin Ali bin Issa Al Harthy provided updates on the geopolitical situation in the Middle East, while Lazaro delivered a briefing on recent developments in the South China Sea.
