The Marcos administration has pledged to respond favorably to requests from Interpol for the arrest or custody of individuals under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC), despite the Philippines no longer being a member of the court. Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin stated this commitment, emphasizing the importance of maintaining strong ties with Interpol for international law enforcement cooperation.
The Marcos administration has pledged to respond positively to requests from Interpol for the arrest or custody of individuals under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court ( ICC ). Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin made this clear on Friday, stating that the Philippines, although no longer a member of the ICC , remains committed to cooperating with Interpol in line with its law enforcement goals and international partnerships.
Bersamin emphasized that while the Philippines is outside the ICC's jurisdiction, cooperation with Interpol on requests does not signify a shift in the government's stance on ICC membership. He further explained that Interpol's role in international law enforcement is crucial, and cooperation ensures the Philippines retains the benefits of its relationship with the organization, particularly in addressing transnational crime. This commitment to cooperation follows hints from Justice Secretary Crispin Remulla that the government might consider limited cooperation with the ICC despite withdrawing from the Rome Statute. Remulla indicated a willingness to engage with the ICC in a spirit of comity, acknowledging ongoing efforts to bridge the divide. Senator Risa Hontiveros welcomed Remulla's statement, expressing hope that real justice for the victims of the Duterte administration's war on drugs could finally be achieved. Meanwhile, The Makabayan Bloc in the House of Representatives also supported the government's readiness to cooperate with the UN-backed body in investigating extrajudicial killings during the Duterte era.
