Philippine Vice President Sara Duterte has been impeached by the House of Representatives on charges including betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the Constitution, bribery, graft, and corruption. This marks the first time in the nation's history that a vice president has faced impeachment. The case now moves to the Senate for trial, but the timing remains uncertain due to the legislative calendar and upcoming elections.
WITH 215 members of the 306-strong House of Representatives endorsing a consolidation of four impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte , the feisty daughter of former president Rodrigo Roa Duterte was impeached on Wednesday, Feb. 5, for betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the Constitution, bribery, graft and corruption, and other high crimes one day before Congress adjourned for its final recess until June 2.
Now the President says he had no hand in the action of the House under Speaker Martin Romualdez, his first cousin. This is as it should be, for he himself is an impeachable official, and he has no constitutional role to play in any impeachment proceeding; but his statement calls for a suspension of belief. If Sara is tried and convicted, she would not only be removed as vice president but above all permanently disqualified from holding any public office.
