The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) anticipates a significant increase in passengers following the holiday season, expecting 674,000 travelers at ports nationwide from January 3 to 5.
The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) is preparing for a significant increase in passengers following the holiday season, forecasting 674,000 travelers at ports nationwide from January 3 to 5. From December 15 to January 2, over 3.6 million passengers utilized the country's ports. Batangas, Bohol, Davao, Negros Oriental/Siquijor, and Bicol have been among the busiest during this period. This surge is anticipated to continue as Filipinos return to their workplaces and residences.
PPA General Manager Jay Santiago assured the public that ports are adequately equipped to handle the passenger volume. He acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the large crowds, attributing it to many individuals being unable to travel home during All Saints’ Day. To ensure safety and security, the PPA has elevated its alert status at all ports, deploying approximately 3,000 security personnel and utilizing K-9 units and 24/7 CCTV monitoring. Despite safety regulations, prohibited items like knives, lighters, and fireworks have been confiscated at ports. A recent incident involved a passenger at Dumangas Port attempting to bring fireworks to Bacolod on December 31, which was intercepted during baggage scanning.
