The local packaging industry in the Philippines is experiencing significant growth, fueled by the expansion of the food manufacturing sector. However, industry leaders are urging the government to provide increased financial support to ensure the competitiveness of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). The Asian Packaging Federation (APF) cites the need for greater budget allocation to agencies like the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to enable MSMEs to access crucial services and technologies.
Amidst the burgeoning food manufacturing sector, the local packaging industry is increasingly vocal in its demand for greater financial support from the government. This call for assistance comes from the Asian Packaging Federation (APF), which emphasizes the need to bolster the competitiveness of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) within the industry.
APF President Joseph Ross Jocson highlighted the industry's robust growth trajectory, largely driven by the expansion of the food manufacturing sector. He noted that numerous members of the Packaging Institute of the Philippines have been actively expanding their facilities to meet the surging demand for packaging solutions.Jocson, however, stressed that the industry's growth cannot be solely attributed to market forces. He underscored the critical role of government support in enabling the local packaging sector to thrive and compete on a global scale. He drew a comparison with Thailand, where the government has provided substantial financial backing to its packaging industry, exemplified by the packaging of durian and pineapple products in Bangkok.Jocson urged the Philippine government to emulate Thailand's approach, advocating for increased budget allocation to relevant agencies such as the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). He argued that this financial injection is essential for MSMEs to access crucial services and technologies, as multinational corporations often have the resources to do so independently. Jocson emphasized that the government's support is crucial for bridging the gap and empowering local businesses to innovate and remain competitive. This sentiment was echoed in the context of ProPak Philippines, an annual international processing and packaging trade event. The fifth edition of this event, scheduled for February 12 to 14, 2025, at the World Trade Center, is poised to attract over 250 industry-leading exhibitors and brands from the Philippines and more than 20 countries worldwide.ProPak Philippines anticipates a sizable attendance of over 12,000 trade visitors, buyers, and stakeholders, creating a platform for businesses to showcase their latest innovations and connect with potential partners.
