THE Philippine Navy in Eastern Mindanao is seeking an explanation from the Sasa Police Station in Davao City regarding the decision to file lighter charges against the two Filipino crew members and two undocumented Indonesian nationals who were apprehended off Balut Island in Sarangani while carrying smuggled cigarettes.
Mauring said they will ask the police why they filed only charges of illegal entry against the suspects, particularly the two Indonesian nationals, instead of smuggling charges, which carry tougher penalties. As reported, the illegal cigarettes found recovered from the suspects were used as a decoy for smuggling contraband worth P125 million into the country.
