NAVAL experts from the Philippine Navy have completed their inspection of six Japan Maritime Self-Defense For ce destroyer escorts this month as possible additions to the Philippine fleet, a Japan-based media agency has reported.Earlier in July, the PN announced its plan to acquire six Abukuma-class destroyer escorts to enhance border patrols and defense capabilities.
The ships are due for decommissioning in 2027 and will be replaced with newer Mogami-class frigates. The PN downplayed the impression that the Philippines is a dumping ground of aging warships, and has sent experts to determine the viability and capability for naval functions of ships it wants to acquire.“Although decommissioned by another country, they still retain certain capabilities that we may repurpose for add-on,” former Navy spokesman Capt. John Percie Alcos said.Read Adm.
