Tahnai Annis, a longtime captain of the Philippine women's national football team, has announced her retirement from professional and international football. Annis, 35, cited her age and desire to give younger players opportunities as reasons for stepping away.

ALL is well and it ends well for longtime Philippine women's national football team captain Tahnai Annis .The 35-year-old booter announced her retirement from the sport during the Futbol Brew podcast last Sunday, Dec 29.

'I guess the reason behind wanting to get on here again with you because I'm not very good at taking videos of myself or manufacturing something like that so I thought this podcast, this conversation with you would be a good way to dive into and unpack my announcement of retiring from international and professional football,' said the midfielder in a two-hour podcast hosted by Venice Furio.Annis was the captain of the Filipinas during the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup and led the team in its title run in the 2022 AFF Women's Championship.Annis, who first joined the national team in 2018, steered the ship for the Filipinas in numerous international battles.Annis was born and raised in the United States but traced her roots in Lucena City. 'I don't think it's any secret how old I am and it's not just because I'm much older as a footballer. I think my body, my mind and kind of, my spirit have just come to a point where it's all in alignment that it's time for me to step away,' she said. With the growth of football in the country, Annis said her decision to retire is a tough call but wants the young guns to have the opportunity to take her spot. 'Obviously, if I felt that I could continue at the level that's necessary to compete at an international and even professional level at this point, I definitely would want to continue on. Because, especially, you know, over the last few years how much our national team has accomplished and continues to progress. Especially, just the layout of women's football all over the world is finally getting its time, I feel like,' she said.Annis retired with 14 goals for the Philippines
