The Philippines recorded its first case of Omicron subvariant XBB.1.16, the Department of Health reported Tuesday.
The DOH said XBB.1.16 is a XBB sublineage that was recently added to the list of variants under monitoring by the World Health Organization and European Center for Disease Prevention and Control last March 22 and 23, respectively. “However, currently available evidence for XBB.1.16 does not suggest any differences in disease severity and/or clinical manifestations compared to the original Omicron variant,” it said.
Out of the 89 samples sequenced, 39 were classified as XBB including 13 XBB.1.5 cases, 14 XBB.1.9.1 cases, and one XBB.1.16 case.
