THE Philippine Navy deployed an unmanned drone to secure the Malampaya Natural Gas-to-Power (MNGPP) Plant off the waters of Palawan fronting the West Philippine Sea from unwanted intruders.

The Malampaya gas field, located offshore some 65 kilometers northwest of Palawan Island, supplies 35 percent of Luzon's power needs. In a post on its website, the Armed Forces of the Philippines' Western Command said the Philippine Navy's Maritime Unmanned Air Reconnaissance Squadron -71 Flight Alpha will boost the Joint Task Force Malampaya's intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities in monitoring incursions into the MNGPP.

The unmanned vehicle could monitor other oil and gas production stakeholders like the Floating Production, Storage and Offloading vessel 'Rubicon Balanghai' operated by the Tamarine Resources in the Gallic Oil Field. In 2020, the Gallic oil field produced 694,673 barrels of oil – higher than the projected 688,000 barrels despite the Covid-19 pandemic.
