The Department of National Defense led the momentous inauguration of a beaching ramp on Pagasa Island in the West Philippine Sea on Tuesday, three days ahead of the celebration of the country’s 122nd Independence Day on June 12.

Pagasa Island is part of the Kalayaan Island Group in the WPS. It is located around 480 km west of Puerto Princesa, Palawan. The completion of the beaching ramp is considered as the first major project to be finished on the island since it was occupied by the Philippines in 1970s. The ceremony also coincided with the first year anniversary of the incident in which a Philippine fishing boat was rammed by a Chinese vessel in the Reed Bank, also in the WPS, on June 9, 2019. The local fishermen were abandoned by the Chinese before they were rescued by Vietnamese fishermen.
