A medical expert said the country is already in the “decelerating phase” of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Ted Herbos, special adviser to the National Task Force Against COVID-19, told ANC on Sunday that there has been a decreasing trend in the country’s case fatality rate.

“We are seeing the decrease. We are in the decelerating phase of our pandemic. We just hope there will be no second wave that can overwhelm our health system,” he said. The case fatality rate in the country is around 4.6 percent, according to Herbos, which is “lower than the global average” of around 5.1 percent.Herbos also said the “treatment” of cases in the country has “markedly improved.”

“In the beginning, we had a very high, alarmingly high case fatality rate, higher than other countries. Now, we are able to lower that,” the medical expert said. “That means our health system is able to cope, our doctors are being able to treat the severe cases and send them home,” he added.
