Defining the News

The Philippines would not end BRP Teresa Magbanua’s three-month old mission at Escoda Shoal despite the arrival of China’s biggest vessel dubbed as “The Monster.”

Still, Navy spokesperson on the WPS Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad, refused to call the situation between the Philippine Coast Guard and the China Coast Guard a “standoff.” It was Trinidad’s response when asked how the Navy would avoid a repeat of the 2012 standoff over another shoal—Panatag —which lasted two months and ended with the Philippines losing the shoal to Chinese control.

“We have almost all of our capital ships already being assigned or doing routine patrols in the West Philippine Sea, not only because of the ‘Monster’ ship,” he told reporters at Camp Aguinaldo.
