The intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ), the region where trade winds from the northern and southern hemispheres meet and characterized by frequent and often severe thunderstorms, will still prevail across Mindanao, a weather forecaster said on Monday.

Due to the ITCZ and localized thunderstorms, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration weather specialist Meno Mendoza said the whole archipelago will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms throughout the week.

He reminded the public to take extra precautions in the event of severe thunderstorms, as flash floods or landslides are possible in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards. Mendoza said PAGASA on Monday has not issued a gale warning across the country’s coasts so fisherfolk and seafarers are safe to sail.

He noted that slight to moderate seas are expected over the entire archipelago, except during the occurrence of severe thunderstorms that are most often accompanied by strong winds causing big waves.Based on PAGASA’s historical data, the formation of two to three tropical cyclones is likely in June, which will either make landfall over central Philippines or veer away from the country.
