Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has surprised the Today show panel, revealing a special gift he bought to mark Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles' birthday.

Mr Dutton and Mr Marles, who celebrated his 56th birthday a day earlier, appeared on Today to discuss the future of the Reserve Bank ahead of Philip Lowe’s replacement being announced.

The Opposition Leader interjected, declaring he had"better than that," revealing to the camera the present he had acquired for Mr Marles. “Maybe a little bit under the ribs, I’m not sure. Richard, this is yours. I will get it to you today.”Richard Marles laughed at Peter Dutton's suggestions as to how he could use the walking stick, Picture: Channel Nine/Today Show

“Peter Dutton is not invited to my birthday if that is the best present. Happy birthday Richard, by the way,” Abo said. “I'm very happy to say we will support somebody who is independent and that's an absolute essential criteria,” he said.
