The Philippine Animal Welfare Society has called for true inclusivity in “pet-friendly” establishments, following reports of alleged breed discrimination against an Aspin at a Tagaytay-based restaurant.
In a separate statement, PAWS expressed disappointment over the incident in which a restaurant staff denied entry to Aspin and its owner. The organization noted that the case underscores the persistent harmful stereotypes and unfair biases against native dogs in the Philippines. “True pet friendliness involves creating a welcoming environment for all breeds including Aspins who are just as deserving of love and acceptance,” the statement continued. On Monday, Lara Antonio, the owner of an Aspin named Yoda, shared on social media that they were denied entry at a “pet-friendly” restaurant in Tagaytay because, according to the staff, “only small- to medium-sized dogs” were allowed and that larger dogs were prohibited.
While the group waited to be seated and for the diapers to be purchased, a staff member dressed in black noticed Yoda, went inside, and returned to whisper something to the front desk staff. The owner pointed out that the lack of clear guidelines was misleading for pet owners, especially those traveling from Manila. She expressed her disappointment that the restaurant labeled itself as “pet-friendly” but seemingly decided entry based on a dog’s breed or appearance rather than clear, consistent policies.Following the incident, Balay Dako, the restaurant involved, issued a statement addressing the situation after it gained attention on social media.
