Peace in the Middle East remains a mirage
ANOTHER conflict has flared up in the Middle East , which has seen no respite in the fighting raging in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.After four years of relative calm, rebel groups in Syria have launched a series of surprise attacks against the government of President Bashar al-Assad, seizing control of a wide swath of territory that includes Aleppo, the country's second-largest city.Government forces have regrouped and are planning to counterattack.
The Syrian Democratic Forces , which seized territory in Syria's east last week, is known to be bankrolled by the United States.The US sent ground troops to help the SDF drive Islamic State extremists out of Syria in 2017. The US has since maintained a small, low-profile force in Syrian territory, perhaps a subtle reminder to Russia to think twice about establishing a foothold in the Middle East.Saudi Arabia has also become a player because its archfoe Iran is already in the fray.
