The Commission on Elections found no reason to reopen the filing of the certificates of candidacy for the May polls. | onenewsph

The petition filed by President Duterte’s political party to reopen the filing of certificates of candidacy for the May 9 elections was denied by the Commission on Elections on Wednesday, Jan. 12.

While copies of the resolutions were not yet available as of last night, Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said both petitions were “unanimously” and “resoundingly denied” by the Comelec en banc. In denying the petition filed by the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan faction loyal to the President, the Commission did not find the grounds for the reopening of the COC filing meritorious, said Jimenez.

Contrary to the claim of the petitioners, the Comelec did not set the dates for COC filing arbitrarily, because it takes into consideration the other preparations involved for an electoral exercise like printing the ballots on time. Jimenez made it clear that having pending petitions before the Comelec is not a ground for reopening the filing of COCs.

However, the poll body has decided move the date of release of the final list of candidates to Jan. 15 with the hope of going to print on Jan. 17. “We estimate that we would be done with the final ballot faces by Jan. 15. Final ballot means that is the final list of candidates,” Jimenez said.
