Treasurer Jim Chalmers said if there was an opportunity to make the Productivity Commission “even better” as part a review he would “grab it”.

When asked whether the PC would be able to continue publishing reports in its own right, Dr Chalmers said that would be his “intention” adding that its independence from government was a “source of strength”.

When asked about the future of current PC chairman Michael Brennan, whose five-year term expires in September, the treasurer was neutral on his prospects of continuing in the role. “This isn’t about Michael. This isn’t about any one person or another. It’s about making sure that we renew and revitalise our institutions and the Productivity Commission is a really important one.”
