Peter Harris, who helmed the Productivity Commission from 2013 to 2018, said while a review of the body was healthy, there were changes the government’s should be wary of.
A former Productivity Commission chairman has warned Treasurer Jim Chalmers against diminishing the independence of the body, saying its public advice is often uncomfortable but necessary reading.
But Mr Harris, who was appointed to the PC by the Gillard government, said the current PC was considered world’s best practice and the local model had been supported and adopted by other OECD nations. Using COVID-19 as cover, Dr Chalmers’ fellow Queenslander and state Treasurer Cameron Dick in 2020 abolished his state’s Productivity Commission as an independent body and folded it into the Treasury.
One former PC economist who wished to remain anonymous said attracting and retaining talent had becoming increasingly difficult and the turnover rate had increased over recent years. As well as struggling to match pay and conditions, the person said many recruits also quickly became disillusioned about the extent to which the commission’s reform recommendations were ignored.
