While the education sector received the largest allocation in the 2025 Philippine national budget, the Philippine Business for Education (PBEd) calls for strong monitoring and oversight to ensure efficient use of funds and address inefficiencies in the education system.

WHILE the education sector got the lion’s share of the national budget for 2025, the Philippine Business for Education is urging the Marcos administration and Congress to put in place “robust” monitoring and oversight mechanisms to ensure taxpayers’ money is used efficiently to achieve the country’s priorities.

The country’s education sector received an allocation of P1.05 trillion for 2025, government data showed. This is 16.6 percent of the P6.326 trillion national budget signed into law by the president last December 30. “We remain concerned about the growing discretionary funds with its inherent nature – being less transparent, accountable, and prone to inefficiencies, duplication and patronage – diverting vital resources from priority sectors such as education and health, which are central to inclusive growth and long-term resilience,” read the PBEd’s statement.

The Philippine business community’s advocacy group for education emphasized that education, health, nutrition and welfare of the people must be the top priority.
