MANILA, Philippines — PBA legend Eugene Quilban passed away on Saturday after succumbing to complications of pancreatic cancer at the Philippine Heart Center.
He was 58.Rhoko, Quilban 's son, confirmed the passing of the former PBA playmaker, who spent eight seasons playing in the pro league during the 1990s. PBA chief statistician Fidel Mangonon, a close friend of Quilban , said the latter has been in and out of the hospital since last year. During his college days, Quilban starred with high-flying guard Bong Alvarez while playing for the San Sebastián Stags in the NCAA, where they won two men's basketball titles in 1988 and 1989.
Quilban's solid playmaking and leadership earned him back-to-back NCAA Most Valuable Player awards during the Golden Stags' title runs.In 1991, Quilban turned pro, emerging as the third overall PBA pick by Alaska.He went on to win the PBA Rookie of the Year, but surprisingly, got traded the following year to the 7-Up/Pepsi franchise.The former SSC superstar eventually registered history after issuing an all-time PBA single-game record of 28 assists when 7-Up routed Shell, 123-100.
