As much as Gilas players led by Justin Brownlee and interim coach Tim Cone were the toast of the town following the national team's historic Asian Games men's basketball gold medal conquest, the PBA recognized the huge role played by two corporate big bosses in Ramon S. Ang and Manny V. Pangilinan.
Ang, president and chief executive officer of San Miguel Corp., joined hands with Pangilinan, known by his initials MVP in bankrolling the Gilas squad that just about a month back, had been in quandary as to who will take the coaching job when Chot Reyes opted to step down after the 2023 FIBA World Cup.Pangilinan is the chairman emeritus of Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, and has served as president of SBP for two terms from 2007 through 2018.
'The process of putting the Gilas team didn't go on smoothly because nearly a week into its preparation, eligibility issues cropped up regarding Calvin Abueva, Terrence Romeo, Jason Perkins and Moala Tautuaa. The issue forced Cone and Gilas team manager Alfrancis Chua to eventually, find a quick replacement, which turned out to be Chris Ross, Kevin Alas, CJ Perez and Arvin Tolentino.
