A new Ontario study underscores the benefits of Paxlovid. Researchers say it also suggest that restricting the drug to those who are at the highest risk of severe outcomes from COVID may be the most cost-effective method.

As most drugs enter the market, like Paxlovid, they undergo clinical trials, Tadrous said. The clinical trials Paxlovid underwent happened before the vaccines were rolled out and before Omicron waves.

The group found the drug remains effective “as long as it’s used in a population that is at high risk for these severe outcomes,” said Dr. Kevin Schwartz, infectious disease physician and lead author on the study. “The relative reduction is pretty consistent across groups, meaning that whatever your baseline risk of severe COVID-19 is, it reduced that by close to 50 per cent in all ages,” Schwartz said.

“There’s other things like cost to the drug if there’s going to be very minimal to no benefit. So while the drug is effective at reducing severe COVID-19, there’s really no point in using it in someone that has virtually no risk of severe COVID-19,” Schwartz said.
