My premise is that the party shouldn’t fall back into the old ways of seeking/selecting a Saviour-Leader to lead them out of the wilderness, but to build a party worthy of attracting a leader. Opinion by Sheila Gervais
I supported former Ontario NDP Premier Bob Rae when he ran for the leadership of the federal Liberals in 2006. When asked why he was leaving the NDP to join the Liberals, Rae would correct on two fronts: the parting wasn’t recent and he didn’t leave the NDP, they left him — his values more closely aligned with the Liberals.
Some may think this means only to shore up the “brand.” When in opposition though, especially with four years to do it, the party should focus less on brand and more on reputation. It’s true, the Green Party and Schreiner personally hold a high reputation, but I’d venture a guess that much of that has to do with their proposals for electoral and political financing reforms as well as certain environmental policies that Liberal leaders and rank-and-file have repeatedly rejected. Even while political financing has been a bane on the Liberal reputation.
