Paul McCartney urges the British government to protect artists' rights and prevent AI companies from exploiting copyrighted material during AI training. The government is consulting on potential copyright changes that could allow unrestricted use of copyrighted works for AI development unless creators explicitly opt out.

LONDON — Paul McCartney has issued a strong warning to the British government against altering copyright laws in a way that could potentially allow artificial intelligence companies to freely exploit artists' work. The government is currently engaged in a consultation process to determine whether tech companies should be permitted to utilize copyrighted material for training AI models, unless creators explicitly opt out.

McCartney expressed deep concern that such a change would severely undermine artists' control over their creations and damage Britain's thriving creative industries. \'You get young guys, girls, coming up, and they write a beautiful song, and they don't own it, and they don't have anything to do with it. And anyone who wants can just rip it off,' the 82-year-old former Beatle stated in an interview slated for broadcast on Sunday. An excerpt was released Saturday by the BBC. 'The truth is, the money's going somewhere. When it gets on the streaming platforms, somebody is getting it, and it should be the person who created it. It shouldn't be some tech giant somewhere.'\The Labour Party government, which is currently in power in Britain, has declared its ambition to position the U.K. as a global leader in the development of artificial intelligence. In December, they initiated a consultation to explore how copyright law could be adapted to 'enable creators and right holders to exercise control over, and seek remuneration for, the use of their works for AI training' while simultaneously ensuring 'AI developers have easy access to a broad range of high-quality creative content.' A coalition of concerned parties, including publishers, artists' organizations, and media companies like The Associated Press, has come together as the Creative Rights in AI Coalition to actively oppose any weakening of copyright protections. 'We're the people, you're the government. You're supposed to protect us. That's your job,' McCartney asserted. 'So you know, if you're putting through a bill, make sure you protect the creative thinkers, the creative artists, or you're not going to have them.
