During power blackouts, some buildings still have working elevators and water pumps for residents, thanks to a generator. But not all do.
Residents of apartment and condo buildings without a generator were left with no access to elevators or water for days on end. People with mobility issues, such as seniors and those living with disabilities, were trapped in their homes, unable to access food, water or medical care. Others were left climbing 12 flights of stairs in the dark with water bottles. The Ottawa Fire Service had to fill bathtubs with water so that residents could flush their toilets for the first time in a week.
What’s more, it isn’t the first time this has happened in Ottawa. The 2018 tornado caused similar hardships. A tenant of an 18th-floor apartment had just had heart surgery when her building lost power. Ottawa firefighters brought her down from the building, one flight of stairs at a time. What’s frustrating is that this kind of hardship is completely unnecessary. Other buildings were able to provide a working elevator and working water pumps to their residents, thanks to a generator. Respect for your human rights during an emergency shouldn’t depend on the good will of your landlord or condo board. And it’s not fair to keep asking the city to pay for the costs of providing alternate resources when a generator isn’t in place.
