Kevin McCarthy's failure to secure enough votes to win the speaker's gavel has paralysed Congress and is preventing House of Representatives members from beginning their work.
House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy is struggling to win the necessary number of votes for the US speaker role.The Republicans' leading House of Representatives speaker candidate has failed on 11 attempts to win enough votes to secure the integral role in an event not seen in more than 160 years.
But it has now reached a level of dysfunction not seen since 1859 - 164 years - when it took 10 votes to select a leader in the turbulent run-up to the Civil War.The House will continue to vote until the necessary threshold is reached, but there is yet no sign Mr McCarthy has a path to nailing down the job.

But despite this, they remain unyielding, saying that they do not trust Mr McCarthy to stick to the scorched-earth tactics they want to use against Mr Biden and the Democratic-controlled Senate.
