Kevin McCarthy loses fourth round of voting for Speaker role, Congress paralysed

: The US Congress remains paralaysed after a mutiny waged by right-wing Republicans continued to block the election of a Speaker, preventing hundreds of new members from being sworn in and stopping all parties from doing any legislative work.

However, when the fourth round of voting began on Tuesday McCarthy was only able to get 201 votes - 17 less than he needed - after colleagues endorsed a new alternative: Florida Republican Byron Donalds, the party’s first black nominee for speaker. Trump’s intervention did not appear to hold much sway among the rebels, with far-right Congressman Matt Gaetz describing the former president’s position as “sad”, while Scott Perry, chairman of the ultraconservative Freedom Caucus, tweeted that he remained opposed to “the status quo” and “won’t back down”.Colorado Republican Lauren Boebert also told the House: “Even having my favourite president call us and tell us we need to knock this off - I think it actually needs to be reversed.

The drama over the Speaker’s job underscores what was already going to be a difficult two years in Washington after the midterm elections ushered in a new era of divided government whereby the Democrats were able to hold on to the Senate while Republicans regained the House. Kevin McCarthy, left, made history on Monday by becoming the first person in a century who was unable to secure the Speaker’s position in the first round of voting.McCarthy has spent weeks trying to woo his detractors by offering a range of concessions, from removing metal detectors around Capitol Hill, to promising new committees and changing the House to make it easier to remove a Speaker.
