Wars often occur when one side thinks it must strike while it has the advantage. This problem is worsened when societies glorify fighting.
In this handout image from the U.S. Navy taken on Aug. 27, 2021, the destroyer USS Kidd transits the Taiwan Strait. Some worry the Americans will eventually be at war with China over Taiwan.“I hope I am wrong. My gut tells me we will fight in 2025.” These are the words of Mike Minihan, a U.S. Air Force general, predicting a conflict between the United States and China over Taiwan.
In the United States, a permissive attitude towards military force has led to one disaster after the other. American troops were sent to Vietnam on the assumption that it was necessary to forestall a falling domino before all of Eurasia went communist. President George W. Bush invaded Iraq to forcibly disarm Saddam Hussein of weapons of mass destruction, on the assumption that those weapons would later be used against Americans or handed over to terrorist groups.
This is not an argument for pacifism. One reason China has never invaded Taiwan is its fear of the American military. This is a good thing. Soldiers need to be armed, trained and ready to fight. As others have argued, Canada needs to invest in our own military.
