Palace spokesperson Harry Roque confirmed Bernie Ferrer Cruz is the new acting secretary of the Department of Agrarian Reform. | JEMendozaINQ

Roque confirmed on Saturday that Cruz will now head the DAR in an acting capacity. Cruz’s appointment was signed on Oct. 28. Prior to being named acting secretary, Cruz served as DAR undersecretary for foreign-assisted and special projects. Cruz vowed to bring progress in the countryside by seeking Congress’ approval to allocate funds for DAR’s Mega Farm project.

The program seeks to develop 50 hectares of contiguous land for specialized crop production but the agency said it would need an additional budget of P5 billion. “It will be beneficial for individual farmers who now own land to enter into commercial and agri-venture arrangements so that they can enter into supply contracts,” Cruz said. —Leila B.
