The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration has raised the possibility of El Niño developing in the coming months from “watch” to “alert,” the second to last stage of the El Niño Southern Oscillation Alert and Warning System. The El Niño Watch has been in effect since March 23, before PAGASA changed the monitoring status to El Niño Alert.
The El Niño or warm phase is characterized by unusually warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific.
