The International Olympic Committee (IOC) denied the bid of eight-division boxing world champion Emmanuel 'Manny' Pacquiao to compete in the Paris Olympics. In response to the Philippine Olympic Committee's (POC) appeal to allow Pacquiao to fight in the Games in July, the IOC stressed that he is five years above the 40-year-old age limit. James McLeod, IOC director for National Olympic Committee Relations, wrote the response to the POC request. One way that Pacquiao could qualify for the Olympics is under the Universality rule, but that option has also been ruled out. The Universality rule exception cannot apply to national Olympic committees (NOCs) with an average of more than eight athletes in individual sports/disciplines at the last two editions of the Games.
