“Any time you get to be on a staff that is representing Canada, it’s a pretty big honour,” McGuigan told SaltWire Network. “It’s surreal, exciting and it’s a nice feather in the hat of the Summerside Western Capitals.”

Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals head coach Billy McGuigan, left, watches the action on the ice during a Maritime Junior Hockey League game against the Miramichi Timberwolves at the Island Petroleum Energy Centre on Dec. 1. Assistant coach Tim Schurman, centre, and equipment manager James Murphy are also following the play. McGuigan and Murphy were recently selected for Team Canada East at the World Junior A Hockey Challenge in Cornwall, Ont., later this month.

“Every organization has a solid group of support staff,” said McGuigan, who makes it a priority to include Caps’ personnel and other MHL coaches for assignments like this whenever possible. “No successful program does it alone.” McGuigan was presented with the opportunity to act as assistant coach for the 2013 tournament, but he later took an assistant coaching position with the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League that season and was unable to participate.

McGuigan understands there is a lot of work to be done in a short period of time as the selection camp is only three days.
