'Fundamentally a Green government will take politics out of health care,' Bevan-Baker said. 'We will make Health P.E.I. truly independent – as it should be – independent of the Premier's Office.'

Green party leader Peter Bevan-Baker listens as Green candidate Lana Beth Barkhouse speaks at a campaign announcement on March 8. The Green party has said they want to get "politics out of health care" by giving Health P.E.I. more independence. - Stu Neatby/SaltWire NetworkCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Green party leader Peter Bevan-Baker says he has a plan that will expand access to health care in P.E.I. while removing politicization from the system.

Bevan-Baker took aim at the record of the health-care record of the Dennis King government, noting the number of individuals on P.E.I.'s patient registry has doubled over the last four years. But like King in his own health care announcement on March 7, Bevan-Baker also said the problems in health care are longstanding.

The Progressive Conservatives have also said they would expand the scope of practice of nurse practitioners and would allow physician assistants to work in P.E.I. But King's plan is focused on allowing these health professionals to work in emergency rooms, while the Green plan emphasized more of a role in primary care.

Finally, Bevan-Baker said he would amend the Health Services Act to allow Health P.E.I. to have more independence from politicians while giving it control over the hiring and recruiting of health workers.
