When police arrived, bystanders were trying to help both Jos and the family. Jos's blue Hyundai and the victim's black Subaru both had extensive damage. "She stopped her vehicle and heard the children who were involved in the accident crying," said Murphy. The father and his two daughters – 14 and 10 years old – were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown for treatment. The 10-year-old girl had a torn abdomen muscle, a broken tibia, broken bones in her left ankle and seatbelt burns.
Murphy said Jos did not have a prior criminal record, and there was no evidence that drugs or alcohol were factors in the incident.Legal-aid lawyer Trish Cheverie said the big unanswered question is why her client committed the driving offence. She noted that Jos was also airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth II hospital in Halifax and was on life-support for two weeks.
