Fire crews from Scotchtown, New Waterford and Glace Bay responded to an overnight blaze Thursday at St. Joseph Church, a centuries-old house of worship near the Lingan Generating Station, just outside New Waterford. “We were called out around 3:45 a.m., and when we arrived, it was fully engulfed,” said Scotchtown Fire Department Chief Raymond Eksal.Crews were remaining on scene, “waiting for an excavator,” Eksal said.According to Shirley MacIntyre, president of the Lingan Heritage Society, the building did receive heritage designation but, despite the group’s attempts to prevent a sale of the church, she said it was later sold privately to a local fisherman.

“Everybody I knew went to church there,” MacIntyre said Thursday. “And I was hoping that one day we would get some support and try to have it converted into a wedding chapel or a place for a concert.”
