An adult orca takes care of a baby pilot whale off Iceland. - Orca Guardians IcelandWhat’s going on when you see a baby pilot whale cozily tucked behind a female killer whale’s dorsal fin?

“They’ve been seen fairly regularly over the course of the study that’s just over a decade long now,” said Elizabeth Zwamborn, a doctoral student in biology at Dalhousie University in Halifax, who studies pilot whales off Cape Breton and collaborates with the Orca Guardians Iceland team. The observation was made because the team was approaching closely in order to take photos of the killer whales’ dorsal fins, “which is how they figure out who is who.

While cross-species adoptions have been documented between bottlenose and common dolphins, which are part of the whale family, “killer whales have never been seen caring for another species before,” she said. So it’s possible the female adopted, or in fact abducted, the baby pilot out of a desire to mother a calf, Zwamborn said.
