just accomplished the feat of defeating a longtime incumbent who had the full support of the Tory machine, but remains a brand new name to those outside her ward.

It’s a good bet Councillor Josh Matlow is thinking hard about it — he’s very popular in midtown and has long been of one of Tory’s most vocal critics. The issue for him is that he isn’t — at least from what I can see — popular among his colleagues at city hall. He’s positioned himself as the leader of the opposition, but his brand of opposition hasn’t inspired followers.

Speaking of which, no one has mentioned Stephen Holyday’s name to me, but for a while he has been pursuing the Rob Ford strategy of being on the losing end of otherwise unanimous votes, which gets his name in the paper as the only genuinely anti-taxing and -spending guy in government. And his Dad was an Etobicoke mayor. So who knows?

Among recently departed councillors, Ana Bailão seemed as close to a successor as Tory had — she was running the housing strategy that was the centrepiece of Tory’s strong-mayor legacy push, and could base a run on carrying that torch. She was one of those city councillors who was nominally progressive but often managed to wind up on Team Rob Ford and then was a close ally of Tory. So if Toronto’s political taste remains in the ideological mush, there’s a lane there.

And of course, last year’s second-place candidate Gil Penalosa and fourth-place finisher Blake Acton have both already put up their hands to run again. International city planning darling Penalosa carried the progressive banner by default last time, while former cop Acton was the default choice of
