The longest\u002Drunning scientific study of human happiness published some results recently that give profound insights into what constitutes “the Good Life.”…
Harvard Study of Adult Development is the quintessential men’s health study. It was launched in 1938, during the Great Depression, with a group of 238 Harvard sophomores. This all-male cohort included John F. Kennedy and longtime Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee. It was basically a group of privileged white males, though the study was expanded to include inner-city Boston residents and also wives and descendants of the original group.
The Harvard study does provide excellent guidance on how to get the most health and happiness out of whatever life we have. While good genes are important, and having a certain amount of money is necessary, the biggest factor is the quality of our relationships. Male friendships, often forged through sports or social clubs, are an important component of good health. The study authors provide some advice for people who are, for whatever reason, lacking close family connections. They note that being connected to the community can also be very meaningful. I belong to the Rotary Club of Calgary , and COVID-19 pushed our meetings onto Zoom. Many members told me the video version of Rotary was lacking in the key component of fellowship.
As it happened, the Probus meeting was held in the Temple B’nai Tikvah building, though it was a completely secular event. Looking at the prayer shawls hanging at the rear of the room reminded me that religion can be an important form of connection for many people. In an interview, Dr. Waldinger said that there wasn’t a direct correlation between religiosity and happiness, though faith can certainly be a source of comfort.
