Op\u002Ded on federal cabinet shuffle.

Ahead of the next election, the Liberals need Guilbeault and Wilkinson to be their Maverick and Goose — special forces to lead the federal government to its aspirational climate targets. However, Albertans may view the duo more as Sesame Street’s Bert and Ernie — there to blister and blunder their way to reaching out-of-sync and out-of-touch climate goals.

The Alberta government will be far from silent on the federal government’s direction. Expect our province’s own tandem of Environment Minister Rebecca Schulz and Energy Minister Brian Jean to continue to publicly feud with the prime minister and his ministers. More recently, Schulz has voiced her opposition to the Liberals’ plastics ban pointing to innovative private-sector solutions like Calgary Co-op and Leaf in using zero-plastic and 100-per-cent compostable bags for consumers.

This political tactic — comparing your values against an existing government who is not officially your opposition — is tried and true. It allows a political party, in this case Alberta’s UCP and the federal Liberals, to establish their own narrative and identity in relation to something that doesn’t pose a direct electoral threat to them. Smith and Trudeau aren’t actually campaigning against each other, even if it seems like it sometimes.

There is a lot of opportunity for those that recognize that Guilbeault is needed to give Wilkinson the cover to work with industry on the future of the energy sector.
