Many issues to debate in Toronto election but too many mayoral candidates creates problems. We can now debate issues missed last fall, but a crowded field could dilute the vote. Opinion by andrewphil
I can confirm I will not be a candidate for mayor of Toronto. Not that anyone’s suggested I run. I mention this only because it seemsI suppose it’s great that so many people are interested. In the last election none of the most obvious alternatives ran because they didn’t want to beat their heads against the brick wall of Tory’s support. The result was a lacklustre campaign that failed to air the big issues facing Toronto.
To start with, it’s very unlikely that anyone will emerge with a convincing mandate. A couple of the most obvious names have already ruled themselves out. So we could well end up with half a dozen or more credible but middling candidates who will split the vote among themselves. A winner could easily emerge with only a third of the vote, even less.
My bet is the right will be a lot more disciplined about this than those on the left/progressive side. Their instinct for power is keener. They’ll be more effective at telling a bunch of hopefuls that they’re going to have to park their egos for now and fall in line behind whoever the backroom types settle on as their horse in this race.
It’ll take a lot more than “bold ideas” to change that dynamic. It’ll take smart organizing, which starts with not splitting your vote into a dozen pieces. It’ll take discipline, in other words.
