Ottawa has just shown tangible resolve in declaring Canada off-limits to Chinese ownership of Canadian critical minerals. These are minerals essential to the production of electric vehicles , cellphones, laptop computers, and power from alternative energy technologies.Last week, Ottawa
To that end, Ottawa believes, Canada should be more selective about who owns our resources, especially those on a critical minerals list Ottawa drew up earlier this year. What other actions against foreign investors are in store? And are we prepared for retaliation against, say, the substantial Mainland China businesses of Toronto-based Canada Goose Holdings Inc. and Restaurant Brands International Inc.?
And why the focus on lithium, when Canada has other critical materials in far greater abundance, along with a century’s worth of processing expertise, as with nickel and aluminum? Canada will need increased global production of critical minerals if it is to meet its climate-crisis targets of a 40 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, and net-zero emissions by 2050.
