Canada ‘not always seen as a reliable partner,’ concedes Joly, giving some details of Canada’s new policy on eve of trip to series of summits in Asia.
China is an “increasingly disruptive global power” and Canada will not apologize for seeking to uphold global rules, Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said Wednesday, as she introduced a long-awaited foreign relations strategy.
“China’s rise as a global actor is reshaping the strategic outlook of every state in the region, including Canada,” Joly said in the speech at the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy in Toronto. “It seeks to shape the global environment into one that is more permissive for interests and values that increasingly depart from ours.”
A full policy document with details on funding will be released within the next month, which sees Joly and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attending the Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit this week in Cambodia, the G20 summit in Indonesia and then the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation economic leaders’ meeting in Thailand.
“Canada was not always seen as a reliable partner” by allies, she said. “That’s why we decided to do this Indo-Pacific strategy.”
