Amid China’s storm, Hong Kong holds fast to its umbrella GlobeDebate

Taiwanese supporters show slogans and yellow umbrellas to support for the nine Hong Kong leaders of 2014 pro-democracy protests, in Taipei, Taiwan, Wednesday, April 24, 2019. A court in Hong Kong is preparing Wednesday to sentence the nine leaders after they were convicted last month of public nuisance offenses. Following the verdict for the Umbrella Movement leaders, Hong Kong stayed quiet. But the fact that people have not returned to the streets does not mean they no longer care.

This consciousness has nourished an ever stronger Hong Kong identity. Many people, particularly young people, are affirming their identity as Hong Kongers, partly by increasingly expressing interest in anything “local.” Bookstores have been prominently displaying books about Hong Kong history, many written by Hong Kong people.
