Ombudsman not inclined to release Duterte, public officials SALN

Full disclosure and public transparency: these two things have been at the forefront of the past few administrations, with government officials being compelled to share their financial profiles through their statements of assets liabilities and net worth (SALN).

The SALNs of public servants have always been released by the Office of the Ombudsman. But this year, when Ombudsman Samuel Martires assumed the post, their SALNs suddenly became inaccessible.

The SALN of President Rodrigo Duterte, in particular, became an object of huge curiosity and intrigue. His Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said a few days ago that it is up to the Ombudsman to release Duterte’s SALN. If the President has anything to hide, Panelo said he wouldn’t have filed his SALN. But even after Panelo’s statements, no action has been taken by the Ombudsman. It was only on Wednesday afternoon that Martires released his stance on it.

“Hindi lingid sa aking kaalaman na may karapatan ang mamamayan na malaman ang SALN ng mga kawani ng pamahalan. Subalit may tungkulin din ako na dapat gampanan at ito ay ang pangalagaan ang mga karapatan at kapakanan ng mga kawani at opisyal ng pamahalaan alinsunod sa nakasaad sa Implementing Rules and Regulations ng RA 6713 ,” the statement reads.Related Posts
