Today, Feb. 13, marks the 35th anniversary of the start of the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. The legacy of the Games lives on but it's starting to show its age, with many worrying about the future of elite sports in the city yyc

“ 2026 was supposed to be a silver bullet for these facilities,” said Dale Oviatt, senior spokesman for Winsport. The ski jumps and Frank King Day Lodge at Canada Olympic Park were photographed on Monday, August 20, 2018. Controversy recently arose when funding meant for bobsled and luge runs was diverted to the day lodge.

Those downhill fortunes are best exemplified by the bobsled and luge runs, which have been indefinitely mothballed for lack of funds to lend them a new lease on life.$10 million in provincial grants for that work was diverted to renovating Winsport’s 37-year-old day lodge“We can’t be everything to everybody. It would have been great to have one at Winsport but it’s not in the cards,” he said, adding there’s still hope those upgrades will be done in the future.

But he said their loss has been balanced at Winsport by excellent venues for competitive freestyle and snowboarding, sports that weren’t part of the Olympics in 1988.Stuart Dryden/Postmedia archiveArt Froese still speaks with pride when recalling his role in building Olympic venues more than four decades ago, a task that followed a direct legacy line when he later oversaw construction work at Winsport.

Calgary’s Games ultimately led to the city attracting a winter sports leadership, including Hockey Canada, notwithstanding its current player abuse scandals, said Froese. “I’m really concerned for the future of sport because it has no priority inside our political system,” he said.“The power of the volunteers, I was just blown away by that — between them and the athletes, they were the stars,” he said.Canadian speedskating gold medallist and Saskatoon native Catriona Le May Doan recalls training at the U of C’s oval after Calgary’s Olympic torch had been doused.
