On January 17, 2025, Olongapo City commemorated the life and legacy of its founding father and martyr, James Leonard Tagle Gordon Sr. , on his 108th birth anniversary. Born on January 17, 1917, in Olongapo, while it was still part of the US Naval Reservation, Gordon was the son of an American father and a Filipina mother. His vision, leadership, and sacrifices laid the foundation for the thriving, resilient city Olongapo has become today.Gordon's journey profoundly shaped Olongapo's history.

Though born an American citizen, he chose Filipino citizenship, a testament to his deep patriotism and love for his birthplace. As a member of the Filipino civilian council under the US Navy, he fiercely defended the rights of his fellow countrymen against the injustices inflicted by some American authorities. This ignited a wave of nationalism among the local community, who yearned for independence from US control. Driven by Gordon's leadership and the people's unwavering support, the American government relinquished its sovereignty over Olongapo to the Philippine government in 1959, marking the last municipality in the Philippines to achieve independence. Gordon was elected mayor in 1966 during the municipality's first election. Within a year of assuming office, he successfully elevated Olongapo to cityhood status in June 1966 through Republic Act 4645. Following his triumph in liberating Olongapo from US rule, Gordon and the people of Olongapo bravely challenged entrenched provincial politicians plagued by rampant corruption. Throughout his administration, the mayor waged a relentless campaign against corruption and political bossism, striving to achieve genuine autonomy. This unwavering dedication to justice earned him formidable enemies who resorted to various forms of harassment, including threats of suspension, hand grenade attacks, and planned ambushes. Three cowardly attempts on his life were made before a final, fatal attack on February 20, 1967. While conversing with a constituent on the first floor of City Hall, Gordon was shot and killed by an escaped inmate from the National Penitentiary. Despite being rushed to the USS Repose, a US Navy hospital ship, he succumbed to grievous head injuries. The mastermind behind the assassination remains shrouded in mystery. High-ranking officials from both the Philippines and the United States, including American Ambassador William Blair Jr., top US Navy and Seventh Fleet officers in Japan, paid their respects to Gordon. On February 18, 2019, Gordon was posthumously awarded the US Congressional Gold Medal by the American Congress, recognizing his invaluable service as a guerrilla during World War II, where he held the rank of lieutenant. His valor and heroism were inherited from his grandfather, Col. Jose Tagle, who led the nation's first victory against the Spanish colonizers in Imus, Cavite, on September 3, 1896. Gordon is remembered from January 17th to the anniversary of his martyrdom on February 20th, giving the people of Olongapo and the country a dedicated time to reflect on and appreciate his extraordinary contributions. His son, former Senator Richard J. Gordon, stated: “We celebrate his life of service, patriotism, and selfless leadership, something we need very badly during these times. His memory lives on and will never be forgotten.
